From Failed Pitches to Breeds and Bones

As someone who’s self employed, I know all about the hustle it takes to freelance successfully. But, I also know all about that dreaded (seemingly inevitable) freelance loop - waiting for the next client and filling my hard drive with more failed pitches than I'd like to admit.

When I opened up an old pitch file one day, it was with the intention of deleting it. It contained six dog breed skulls created a few years earlier that, despite collecting digital dust on my computer, I just wasn't ready to let them go. So, instead of tossing them into the digital void, I threw them up on Instagram in the summer of 2021. My first personal project in years—no client, no brief, just me and some bones.

And wouldn't you know it, a small but loyal group of macabre misfits (dog nerds, as they called themselves) started showing up. They weren’t just casual fans either; they were breed junkies. Obsessed with their one breed, these folks didn’t care about anything else—so long as their chosen breed’s skeleton was on display.

Today, I have over 100 breed skulls and skeletons rattling in my closet (pun intended). But even after that, I’ve hesitated. I’ve never been certain there was a big enough audience for this kind of dark, anatomy-inspired work - especially in a world dominated by fluffy, royal portraits of dogs dressed in crowns and capes. But ultimately, that’s what makes Bark and Bone stand out.

Your favorite breeds, stripped to their bones

And so, here we are—on a mission to de-fluff the pet art world. Our goal? To serve the bone-i-fied breed junkie who craves bold, anatomy-inspired art that celebrates their favorite breeds in all their raw, skeletal glory.
